Mindset is an essential part of building a successful writing career. Without the right mental framework, it is difficult for authors to build a profitable writing career. In our blog post The Money-Making Author Mindset: Strategies for Financial Growth and Success for Writers we cover different mindset shifts authors can make to increase book sales and their income.

Strategy 1: Treat Your Writing as a Business and Embrace Entrepreneurial Thinking

The number one mindset shift that authors who want to achieve financial success with their writing need to make, is to start thinking of their writing as a business and adopt an entrepreneurial mindset. Authors who treat their writing as a hobby do not put the proper systems in place to make money. If you only write when you feel like it and do not actively create marketing promotion plans you will not be able to make a living off your writing. Selling books is hard work and if authors want to make substantial money from their books they need to adjust their mindset to think like an entrepreneur instead of a hobbyist.

What is an Entrepreneur?

Entrepreneurs are people who are willing to go out on a limb, take calculated risks, and take innovative approaches to make their businesses a success. These people quickly adapt to changing circumstances, identify opportunities, and persist through setbacks and failures. Entrepreneurs have a vision for their businesses. These people grind, hustle, and pour their time and money into making their ventures succeed. Simply put, entrepreneurs are often driven people who do what it takes to make a business work.

How Can a Writer Start Acting Like an Entrepreneur and Treat Their Writing Like an Actual Business?

There are numerous ways that authors can start treating their writing like a business.

One way writers can start acting more like an entrepreneur is by defining their short-term and long-term goals and breaking down those goals into a  plan. Authors can break down their plans into smaller specific tasks with deadlines. Authors can then consistently work on accomplishing those tasks and can track their progress.

Authors should consistently work on their writing every day, the same way an entrepreneur puts in hours of work on growing their business. Whether it is actually writing their books or working on marketing, authors should not just haphazardly work on their business every once in a while, but on a  daily basis give their writing career consistent effort.

Writers need to develop marketing plans with strategies for how they can reach their target audience. Common strategies are setting up book signings, online blog tours, speaking engagements, running online ads, and doing social media marketing. Authors need to constantly work on building up their author platform by creating blogs, newsletters, and podcasts, and using social media to expand their reach. Many authors complain they hate marketing but without doing extensive marketing for their books they will not sell. Marketing is a huge part of what makes or breaks an author's writing career.

Authors need to manage their finances just like a real business. Writers need to keep track of the income coming in from their books, their marketing expenses, and how they can reinvest their profits back into their business to keep growing their author platform.

Just like other entrepreneurs, writers need to be ready to quickly adapt to changes, take calculated risks, and innovate creatively to sell more books. Authors need to spot opportunities and continue forward even when there are setbacks and failures. Writers who want to have a thriving writing career need to put in lots of effort, time, and money to succeed.

Strategy 2: Adopt a Positive Abundance Mindset Instead of Operating From a Scarcity Mindset!

All too often, you run into authors who operate only from a scarcity mindset instead of a mindset of abundance. These authors are too scared to spend money to grow their author platform. They make their decisions based on fear and do not run ads. These authors try to do everything by themselves and do not do proper marketing for their books. Authors operating under a scarcity mindset always say I can't afford to pay for a blog tour, I can't afford to run ads, I can't afford to build an author website. It is always I Can't afford something instead of How can I?

By changing your mindset to one of abundance, you can start attacking problems with How can I run ads? How can I pay for services to market my book better? By switching to a positive mindset of abundance you can start thinking more creatively about how to do things to make those happen. Thinking positively that you will see the fruits of your labor in the future. We are not saying rack up lots of debt but maybe you can spend an extra $5, $10, or $20 on ads. Maybe you can do extra side jobs or sell off old junk at garage sales to afford an author website. Maybe you can refurbish and flip items to have extra cash to invest in building your financial future as an author. Marketing for any business is critical.

One of our favorite quotes about going all in on your dreams or goals is from a comedy movie that came out in 2009 called Fired Up! "You gotta risk it to get the biscuit." - Shawn Colfax

Another favorite quote of ours is "Go big or go home!"

To grow your career as an author you need to invest in your future. You have to take that leap and say to yourself, "I am going for this!" Operate out of a mindset of abundance knowing that you will make this writing thing work no matter what. Go for your dreams! You have to take some risks to get results.

Strategy 3: Take the Time to Create High-Value Content and Improve Your Writing Craft

To grow financially as an author you need repeat buyers. By creating valuable stories that are high quality you can build up loyal fanbases of readers.

If you do not take the time to improve your writing and just keep publishing low-value stories as fast as possible trying to play the quantity over the quality game you will only get one-time buyers. Of course, you also do not want to fall victim to being a perfectionist only working on only one story for 20 years. But you do not want to just rush the process and slap book covers on novels that are not ready to be published, just for the sake of publishing lots of books as fast as possible. It is better to take the time to write one or two books a year that are really good than publishing a lot of lower-quality books.

You want to take the time to consistently improve your writing craft. Spend the time to create great plots and characters and come out with books that matter. Take the time to do in-depth research and continuously study on how to improve your writing. Create stories that readers will want to read over and over again. By taking the time to consistently craft amazing stories you can build a loyal fanbase that looks forward to buying each book that you write. By slowing down and maybe only writing one or two really well-put-together books a year you can build an amazing career as an author that will pay off in the long run.

Strategy 4: Invest in Yourself as a Writer

Another money-making author mindset is to invest in yourself as a writer. Signing up for writing and business conferences and taking online courses to learn and improve your writing and marketing abilities is crucial to helping you succeed as an author. Many authors often feel guilty about spending money on a course, mentor, book, or class but without investing in your career you often stagnate. Getting information on how to write or market better is necessary if you want to build financial stability.

People don't hesitate to pay thousands of dollars for college yet pause and debate about taking a $100 course. That $100 course or that $20 book on writing, or paying for a writing mentor to coach you through writing a book, could completely change your writing career. Keep improving yourself as a writer and you can change your life.

Strategy 5: Develop an Author Brand and Identify Who Your Audience Is

Who are you as an author? What is your author brand or identity? Who is your audience? These are questions authors must ask themselves if they want to succeed and create a money-making business from writing books. Having a strong brand identity can help authors market their books and cater to their audience. Knowing your niche can help you increase sales and create marketing content that fits your audience.

For Example: Marketing for older women who love reading historical romance books is completely different from marketing for teenage boys that like medieval fantasy or marketing for teenage girls that love books that are paranormal.

Many authors make the mistake of not taking the time to identify their genre, their author brand, and who their audience is. By taking the time to identify your author brand and audience you can make marketing content that your audience will enjoy. Your author website, bookmarks or just general content that you share on social media should reflect your brand as an author.

Strategy 6: Create Multiple Streams of Income

Another money-making author mindset strategy is to create multiple streams of income. It is surprising how many authors do not diversify their writing income. These authors write one book and maybe only publish one version of that book and hope to make money from that one Ebook. But there are tons of ways to increase your sources of income as a writer. One of the most simple ways is to make multiple versions of your book. With one novel you could create an Ebook, paperback print book, hardcover print book, large text print book, and an audiobook version. Every new book that you write is a new source of income and if you make multiple versions of each book that you can quickly build up your different sources of income.

After you have written at least 3 stories you can create boxed sets to sell, which is now a new product by combining your previous works.

Outside of selling books, authors can diversify their income streams by taking on speaking engagements, teaching writing courses, getting paid for editing other authors' manuscripts, and offering author coaching to help other writers.

Selling merchandise based on your books is huge for authors. Authors can create t-shirts, bags, notebooks, and other items with fun quotes or sayings from their novels. Children's book writers can have toys made that match the characters from their children's books. There are so many fun opportunities for creating merch to sell from your books. Do your characters have a necklace or a certain style of clothing they always wear? Think to yourself how your fans can show they are a fan of your books. Look at other fandoms and see what stuff people buy because they love a book.

Example: From the Harry Potter books and movies, fans buy Gryffindor scarves and robes, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. People eat candies that are made up in the books and movies like chocolate frogs and bertie botts every flavor beans. In the movie Pirates of the Caribbean there is Jack's magic compass that doesn't point north and his iconic hat. Think about what things can you incorporate in your story that readers will love and connect with and as a fan what would they want.

You can also have your book translated into different languages and can take those different book versions and publish them in different countries.

With just Amazon alone it is super easy to publish your book in the countries listed below:

  • United States
  • United Kingdom
  • Germany
  • France
  • Spain
  • Italy
  • Netherlands
  • Japan
  • Canada
  • Mexico
  • Australia
  • Brazil
  • India

By creating multiple income streams authors can maximize their earnings potential. By having multiple books and ways of bringing in money authors can create a more stable income. If one book is not performing well but you have written 20 other books that all have let's say 3 versions of each, that is suddenly 60 different sources of revenue, not to mention boxed sets. If you also get paid to edit other manuscripts, do coaching for other authors, and do speaking engagements, those can all help bring in income.

Strategy 7: Don’t Quit! Writing Is a Marathon! Stay Persistent!

Many new authors have the mindset that success comes quickly or that their first book will instantly be an overnight success. This is highly unlikely. Most authors take years to develop an income that they can live off of. It takes lots of hard work and results are not immediate. Building a writing career is a marathon, not a race. If you want to develop a writing career that is profitable you have to stay persistent. Continually improve your writing skills, keep writing more books, and keep working on growing your author platform. It sometimes takes years of consistently publishing book after book before writers become financially successful from their books. Do not quit if your first, second, or third book flops. Sometimes it takes 10-20 books before your career rapidly improves. Keep writing, marketing, improving your writing skills, and innovating.

Strategy #8: Quickly Adapt to New Online Platforms, Marketing Techniques, and Technology

Another money-making author mindset strategy is to quickly adapt to new online platforms, marketing techniques, and technology. Many humans hate change and adapting to new online platforms, marketing techniques, and technology is hard. People take comfort in sticking with what they know. But to have financial success by selling books authors need to have the ability to quickly adapt to changing circumstances. New online platforms open up huge opportunities that writers need to quickly take advantage of. It has been proven time and time again by entrepreneurs that jumping in early on new online platforms, marketing techniques, and technology can be absolutely life-changing.

Strategy #9: Do Not Envy or Compete Against Other Writers. Instead, Build up a Support System and Collaborate With Other Authors.

Maybe it's due to jealousy or limiting beliefs such as thinking that there are not enough customers reading books or perhaps other reasons, but many authors, unfortunately, get competitive or envious of one another. Authors start to see fellow authors as competition instead of an ally. These negative beliefs hold authors back.

Other authors can be your greatest resource. There are plenty of customers out there and it is immature for authors to be vying against one another. By befriending other authors, you can create great networking opportunities and have chances to cross-promote books. By shifting your mindset, you can create a community of other authors in your genre and you can all help each other grow an audience and sell more books.  Authors can work together to build their audiences by sharing each other's book releases in newsletters and promoting each other on social media.

Strategy #10: Realize That You Always Have the Potential To Improve Your Craft

A mindset shift that authors need to make to build a successful writing career is to recognize that there will always be room for improvement. Authors need to continuously keep learning and improving their craft. You can find thousands of instructional how-to blogs through Pinterest and other places on the internet that can help you improve your craft at no cost. Google is your friend. There are also many informative Youtube videos. If you have the will to learn the information is available.

Fun Fact. Did you know that according to a survey done by Business Insider that the average top CEO reads around 60 books per year or about 5 books per month? Some CEOs read more than 100 books per year.

These CEOs understand that they have to continuously improve to keep their business successful. CEOs know that they have to stay up-to-date- with industry trends and rapidly advancing technology or their company will be left behind in the dust.

As an author, you are the CEO of your own small business. Just like any other business CEO, authors need to keep studying the latest marketing trends, advancing technology, and keep working to create better products.
